Mississippi State Falls Short To No. 1/1 South Carolina, 85-66

COLUMBIA, S.C - Mississippi State fell to No. 1/1 South Carolina 85-66 in its SEC road opener inside Colonial Life Arena on Sunday.
Mississippi State is now 13-4 and 0-2 in the SEC on the season.
Senior guard Jerkaila Jordan finished with a team-high 25 points, in addition to four rebounds and team-high tying three assists in 36 minutes. The point total surpasses her previous SEC-high and marks her seventh game with 20-plus points this season. She has scored in double figures in 15 of 17 contests this season and has eclipsed the mark in nine of her last 10 in SEC action.
Graduate student guard Lauren Park-Lane turned in 14 points on 6-11 from the field with a team-high tying three assists and three rebounds in 32 minutes, while freshman forward/center Quanirah Montague added six points, six rebounds and two blocks in 14 minutes in her reserve role.
Mississippi State initially quieted the home crowd by securing an 11-8 lead at the initial media timeout with 4:56 left in the first quarter following a floater in traffic from Park-Lane.
An offensive rebound and second-chance finish from Montague secured the Bulldogs a five-point lead at 15-10 with 3:57 left in the first quarter.
Jordan posted up her defender and knocked down a turnaround jump shot that kept Mississippi State's lead at 19-16 with 2:14 left in the first quarter. South Carolina responded with an 10-2 over the final part of the frame to take a 26-21 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Mississippi State has now scored 20-plus first-quarter points in nine of the last 12 contests.
Trailing 37-25 in the second quarter, Mississippi State went on a 7-0 run over a two-minute stretch that was capped off by a steal and fastbreak finish from Jordan to cut the deficit to 37-32 with 3:55 left before half.
Mississippi State held South Carolina scoreless for almost four minutes of action prior to a late spark by the Gamecocks before the half that secured them a 44-34 lead heading into the locker room. Mississippi State matched South Carolina's physicality in the first 20 minutes with 22 of its 34 first-half points scored from inside the paint.
South Carolina used an 18-12 third quarter and opened the fourth with a 7-0 run through the first minute of action to extend its lead to 69-46.
Mississippi State finished with 40 points in the paint – the second most allowed by South Carolina this season. Mississippi State held the advantage in second-chance points at 16-15.
Mississippi State remains on the road to take on Arkansas inside Bud Walton Arena on Thursday at 8:00 p.m. CT.
