Mississippi State Rolls Over Memphis, 81-63

MEMPHIS – Graduate student center Jessika Carter finished with her third straight double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds in 29 minutes to lead Mississippi State to an 81-63 road win over Memphis at Elma Roane Fieldhouse on Sunday.
With the win, Mississippi State has won three straight contests and improves to 11-2 in the season.
Carter is averaging 21.7 points and 14.6 rebounds over the last three contests since her return. She also tied a career high with six blocks in the contest.
Senior guard Jerkaila Jordan finished with her fifth 20-plus point game of the season with a team-high 21 points and seven rebounds in 33 minutes. Mississippi State is now 10-0 when Jordan scores 20-plus points under head coach Sam Purcell.
Jordan also tied career high marks in free throws made and attempted on 8-10 from the free throw line. Mississippi State shot 21-28 for 75 percent from the line as a team.
Sophomore guard Debreasha Powe added 14 points on 5-7 from the field with three rebounds in 37 minutes.
50 of the 81 points came from inside the paint – the fourth game for Mississippi State this season with 50-plus points in the paint. It is also the 16th time under Purcell that the Bulldogs have scored 80-plus.
After each team traded baskets on their initial possessions in the first quarter, Mississippi State went on a 14-2 run and forced six turnovers the next five minutes to make it 16-6 with 3:49 left through the first 10 minutes.
11 early points from Carter and graduate student forward Erynn Barnum helped the Bulldogs secure a 22-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Mississippi State and Memphis each added 15 points in the second quarter as the Bulldogs took a 37-28 advantage into the locker room.
Mississippi State converted on 50 percent from the field - its sixth contest this season shooting 50-plus percent from the field. It marks the 12th time under Purcell and the Bulldogs are 12-0 in those contests.
The lead for Mississippi State did not get any smaller than nine at 51-42 with 2:10 remaining in the third quarter before Jordan turned in back-to-back baskets to close out the frame and secure a 54-45 edge with the fourth quarter ahead.
Mississippi State kept their hosts at arms length in the first half of the fourth quarter with eight points from Powe. Graduate student guard Lauren Park-Lane beat her defender and dropped in a floater through contact to provide Mississippi State its largest lead of the contest at the eventual final with 34 seconds left in regulation.
Mississippi State remains on the road to take on Colorado State on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. CT for its final contest before Christmas break.
