Five Things To Know MSU-Murray State

STARKVILLE – Mississippi State men's basketball heads into the home stretch of its non-conference slate as the Bulldogs square off with Murray State for the program's "Christmas At The Hump" matchup on Wednesday evening at Humphrey Coliseum.
The Bulldogs (7-2, 0-0 SEC) put a two-game skid in the rear-view mirror with an emphatic 106-76 rout of Tulane at the Holiday Hoopsgiving event in Atanta over the weekend.
The 106 points marked the highest total for a Coach Jans coached team, the highest total for State since a 103-81 win over BYU in 2018-19 and the highest total for the Maroon and White outside the state of Mississippi going back to a 105-68 victory over Florida in 1958-59.
The Bulldogs also set several additional season watermarks headed by 31 assists on 41 made baskets (75.6 percent), canned 13 three-pointers and featured five players in double figures for the first time during the 2023-24 campaign.
State features a suffocating defense under second-year coach Chris Jans after being one of two teams to rank inside the nation's top 25 in scoring defense, opponent field goal percentage defense and steals in 2022-23.
This season, the Bulldogs hold the SEC's top spot and are among the top 20 in three-point field goal percentage defense (24.9 – 4th), field goal percentage defense (37.2 – 8th), and scoring defense (62.0 – 18th). The Bulldogs also hold national top 30 rankings from KenPom.com in defensive efficiency (89.9 – 3rd), effective field goal percentage defense (42.0 – 4th) and opponent offensive rebounding percentage (24.4 – 28th).
State's offense has drained 75 three-pointers which is tied for the fourth-most in program history over the team's first nine games. Josh Hubbard, Trey Fort, Dashawn Davis and D.J. Jeffries have each hit 10+ triples on the season and combined for 58 of the team's 75 treys (77.3 percent).
The Racers (5-5, 1-1 Missouri Valley), under the direction of former Iowa State coach Steve Prohm, pride themselves on taking care of the basketball and committed just 9.5 turnovers per game which ranks among the NCAA's top 30.
Murray State has four players averaging in double figures led by Rob Perry (15.0 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 1.9 APG) who already has two outings of 20+ points. JaCobi Wood (13.5 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 3.8 APG) enters Wednesday's contest 10 points shy of 1,000 for his career, while Nick Ellington (11.1 PPG, 8.3 RPG, 1.8 BPG) has secured a pair of double-doubles.

State has won seven of the nine meetings between the two schools, the latest a 78-61 victory, during the 2007-08 season. 1. Chris Jans, one of the nation's premier bench bosses, leads State's program. He is assisted by James Miller, David Anwar and George Brooks. The Iowa native was one of 10 SEC coaches to amass at least 21 victories and secure a NCAA Tournament berth during their first season in league history during the 2022-23 season.
Jans, a three-time WAC Coach of the Year during his tenure at New Mexico State, owns an impressive .743 winning percentage (171-59) in his eighth season as a NCAA Division I head coach.
