SEC Sunday Soccer Showdown: Dawgs Set to Take on Unbeaten Wildcats in Nationally Televised Bout
October 14, 2023 | Soccer
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Mississippi State (8-3-3, 3-2-1 SEC) is poised to continue their climb in the SEC standings as they travel to Kentucky to take on the 18th ranked Wildcats (8-0-5, 2-0-4 SEC) live on the SEC's flagship network. This highly anticipated matchup pairs two squads who are tied for third in the SEC standings with 10 points each as the season begins drawing to a close.
The Dawgs are coming off a perfect 2-0 week in the SEC that saw 1-0 decisions at Florida (State's first win in Gainesville in program history) and was capped off by capturing the Magnolia Cup from Ole Miss for the fourth consecutive season. With State capturing six points last week, they were able to move into a three-way tie for third place with Kentucky and Texas A&M within the conference with ten points each. The last three matches have all produced ever-important results for State as they secured a point with their tie over Tennessee.
Mississippi State comes into this matchup ranked 22nd in the NCAA RPI rankings (fourth highest in the conference) while Kentucky is currently 29th. In terms of similar foes, both squads have faced off against Texas A&M (Kentucky tied 1-1, State fell 0-1), Florida (Kentucky tied 1-1, State won 1-0) and Tennessee (Kentucky tied 1-1, State tied 3-3). MSU has captured the last two meetings over the Wildcats, most recently a 1-0 win in Starkville.
On the other side of the pitch, Kentucky is currently enjoying its longest-ever undefeated streak to kick off a season, with a flawless record in its first six SEC matches, a feat not seen by the Wildcats since 2003. Their recent triumph came in the form of a 2-0 victory at home against Vanderbilt, putting an end to a six-match losing streak against their Commodore rivals. This win has propelled the Wildcats to 10 points in the SEC, their highest point total since the 2015 season.
Úlfa Úlfarsdóttir (PK) and Maya Lacognato both made notable contributions to the match by scoring goals, while Marz Josephson showcased her goalkeeping prowess with her seventh shutout of the season. In recognition of their outstanding performances, Úlfarsdóttir received the Offensive Player of the Week award, and Josephson was named Defensive Player of the Week in the SEC. This remarkable achievement marks the first time that the University of Kentucky has had two weekly award winners from the conference in the same week since Kayla King and Keli Hubly earned this distinction in October of 2012.
Fans of women's collegiate soccer are surely in for a treat when the Dawgs and Wildcats kick things off Sunday afternoon in Lexington. The match is set for a 2 PM CT start and will be broadcast on the SEC Network.
