No. 21 Unbeaten Dawgs Return Home for Contest with LSU
September 24, 2022 | Soccer
STARKVILLE – The unbeaten Mississippi State soccer program returns home Sunday night for a matchup with the LSU Tigers (7-1-2, 2-0-0).
The contest will kick off at 6:30 p.m. CT on SECN+. Both squads enter the match unbeaten in league play.
Â
"We are looking forward to Sunday's challenge and playing in front of our home fans," head coach James Armstrong said. "It will be a very competitive game."
Â
MSU returns home after securing its first conference road win of the season, a 1-0 victory at Texas A&M. Mississippi State is one of four teams to start 2-0-0 in conference play and already leads the Western Division with six points, making the Bulldogs the only team in the SEC to earn all six points from division-opponent victories.
Â
LSU enters the match having topped Missouri, 2-1, in its conference home opener. Mizzou scored the opening goal of the match, the only one scored in the first half, before LSU netted two-straight goals in the 74th and 85th minute.
Â
The Dawgs pushed their unbeaten streak out to 10-straight after securing a 1-0 victory at Texas A&M. The 8-0-2 record is the best start to a season through 10 matches for Mississippi State. Six days after she broke the program record for career shutouts, goalkeeper Maddy Anderson once again registered a clean sheet - her eighth of the season and 14th overall in her career. The feat was secured by posting a season-high seven saves.

NATIONAL RECOGNITION
After going unbeaten in non-conference play and upsetting the top-15 Razorbacks, the Bulldogs find themselves ranked No. 21 in Top Drawer Soccer's Week 6 rankings. It's the first time since 2018 MSU has been ranked.Â
CONFERENCE LEADERS
MSU leads the SEC in Goals Against Average (0.20) and Shutout Percentage (0.80). Anderson is first in the conference with eight shutouts and standout freshman Maggie Wadsworth is tied for the lead for most goals scored in conference games (2).Â
SHUTOUT SZN
MSU's eight shutouts rank third for most in a season. Anderson's eight shutouts is tied for the most in one season for a MSU goalkeeper in program history. It's the second-highest total (9) a MSU squad has registered in one season.Â
PUPS LEADING THE PACK
Fourteen of MSU's 17 goals this season have been scored by an underclassman. The 17 goals recorded to State are already higher than what six former MSU squads finished their season with. In 2021, only one underclassman found the back of the net. This season, not only do the young pups lead in goals, but eight of the team's 15 total assists have been registered by either a freshman or sophomore. Â
