Aggies’ Own Goal Keeps No. 21 Dawgs Unbeaten
September 22, 2022 | Soccer
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 21 unbeaten Mississippi State soccer program picked up its second consecutive win over Texas A&M (5-3-2, 0-2-0), Thursday night, in College Station, Texas. The 1-0 victory, via an Aggies' own goal, pushes State's unbeaten run out to 10 straight matches. It's the eighth win and fourth consecutive shutout of the season for MSU.
"Tonight was a hard-fought game," head coach James Armstrong said. "We are immensely proud of the effort the entire team put in tonight, as we really needed everyone. [Texas A&M] is one of the toughest places to get a result in the country, so we will enjoy this one tonight and get back to work [Friday]. We are looking forward to a big crowd at home on Sunday [night against LSU]."
In State's second conference game in a row, the match started off relatively quiet. In the opening 45 minutes, only ten total shots were recorded between both squads – four by the Dawgs and six by the Aggies.
The score would remain knotted at 0-0 for the first 50 minutes of play. In the 52nd minute, though, State was awarded a free kick after an Aggie defender fouled freshman Alivia Buxton near midfield. Graduate senior Gwen Mummert's service would land just outside the top of the box where a Texas A&M player headed the ball into the path of sophomore transfer Haley McWhirter. The ball would take three bounces before McWhirter kicked it back into the front of goal where an Aggie defender poked it into the net, the first own goal by an MSU opponent all season.
Six days after she broke the program record for career shutouts, goalkeeper Maddy Anderson, once again, registered a clean sheet – her eighth of the season and 14th total. Thursday night, she would log the shutout by registering a season-high seven saves.
The second consecutive conference win to open the 2022 season marks the first time a Mississippi State squad has started league play 2-0-0 in program history. The 8-0-2 start is also the best start through 10 matches in program history for the Bulldogs.
State will return home Sunday (Sept. 25) for a matchup against the LSU Tigers (7-1-2, 2-0-0). That match will kick off at 6:30 p.m. CT. Admission is free to all Mississippi State soccer home matches.
