Dawgs Ready for NCAA Tournament Showdown Against New Mexico State
November 10, 2022 | Soccer
STARKVILLE – The No. 7 seeded Mississippi State soccer program prepares for its second NCAA Tournament appearance in a regional-round matchup with the New Mexico State Aggies (13-4-3, 7-2-2 WAC). Friday's match (Nov. 11) will kick off at 3 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Â
"We cannot wait to play our final home game of the season in front of our fans," head coach James Armstrong said. "The girls are excited and ready to play versus a very good New Mexico State team."Â
Â
The match marks the second time State has hosted a NCAA Tournament game, the first coming in 2018. Friday will also be the first-ever meeting between the Bulldogs and the Aggies.
Â
It will be the 11th time State will play in Starkville during the 2022 campaign. In the regular season, State recorded six wins, 15 goals and five shutouts at home.
 Â
MSU is coming off a historic SEC Tournament that featured a 99th-minute header from graduate transfer Jojo Ngongo over Texas A&M in overtime to secure the Dawgs their first quarterfinal appearance ever.
Â
New Mexico State, meanwhile, is coming off its first WAC Tournament title in program history. The Aggies scored the game-winner in the 43rd minute, despite getting outshot by Utah Valley, 18 (6 on goal) to 8 (3 on goal). It's the first NCAA Tournament appearance for NM State.
Â
In its first-ever appearance at the SEC Quarterfinals and for the first time at a neutral site this season, MSU fell to No. 1 seeded Alabama. Despite the loss, State became the ninth team all season to hold Alabama to two goals or fewer in a game, and only the third SEC team to hold the Crimson Tide scoreless in a 45-minute window. Mac Titus and Hannah Pimentel would team up with five total saves to keep State within the two-goal threshold.
