MSU Breaks Attendance Record in Second Consecutive Match

STARKVILLE – For the second time in as many home matches, the Mississippi State soccer program broke its all-time attendance record, as 1,613 fans showed their support for the Bulldogs on Thursday night.
Despite outshooting South Carolina (8-2-3, 3-2-0 SEC) four shots to zero in the second half, State was ultimately unable to find an equalizer as the Bulldogs suffered its first loss of the season, falling 1-0 to the Gamecocks.
"[I'm] really proud of the effort tonight, especially the second half," head coach James Armstrong said. "We, obviously, had a disappointing occurrence at the beginning of the game, but I thought the girls responded well from that. Credit to South Carolina – they defended really well and the goal was a tremendous goal."
Within the first minute, goalkeeper Maddy Anderson made her first save of the game. It would be the only action Anderson faced before exiting due to injury.
Sophomore and Chelsea, Alabama, native Mac Titus subbed on in goal, making her first-career appearance as a Bulldog. Less than five minutes later, however, the Gamecocks would score the eventual game-winner off a strike from distance in the sixth minute.
Throughout the remaining 84 minutes, State's backline held South Carolina to two shots and one shot on goal. It's now the sixth time this season MSU has allowed two total shots on goal, or fewer, in one match.
For the ninth time this season, State registered more shots than its opponent. Thursday night was also the 11th time in 13 matches that MSU delivered more corner kicks than its opponent.
The Bulldogs will look to bounce back when they travel to their neighboring state (Sunday, Oct. 9) for a matchup against the Auburn Tigers (5-3-5, 1-3-1 SEC). That match will kick off at 2 p.m. CT.
