State Faces Alabama in SEC Tournament Quarterfinals

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 8 seeded Mississippi State soccer program turns its sight toward the No. 1 seeded Alabama Crimson Tide (17-1-1, 10-0 SEC). Tuesday's game (Nov. 1) will kick off at 5 p.m. CT and will air, nationally, on the SEC Network.

In the regular-season meeting between the Dawgs and Crimson Tide, State dropped only its second home loss of the season, 4-1. Despite the loss, MSU's Haley McWhirter scored her sixth goal of the season.

MSU secured its first appearance in the SEC Tournament Quarterfinals after a 2-1, overtime victory over Texas A&M. Two members from the 2022 senior class scored the goals, while the underclassmen picked up their 13th and 14th assist of the season.

Alabama, meanwhile, is coming off a 1-0 win over their in-state rival, Auburn, to secure its undefeated run through conference play. The West Division champion outshot the Tigers 14-12. Tuesday's match against State will be their first of the tournament after securing a first-round bye.

For the second time this year, State beat Texas A&M. Graduate defender Gwen Mummert scored her second of the season in the first half. The Bulldogs held the Aggies off the scoreboard until the 85th minute when A&M scored the equalizer. With less than a minute left in the first overtime period, graduate transfer Jojo Ngongo scored her first for State to secure the victory. Mac Titus had a career-high nine saves in goal.

SAME TOURNAMENT, DIFFERENT BEACH
For the first time, the SEC Tournament is being held in Pensacola, Florida. For the previous 18 of 19 years, the Tournament was held in Orange Beach, Ala. It's also the second year the state of Florida has hosted.Â
MAKING HISTORY IN DRAMATIC FASHION
The match that moved State past the first round became the longest match State has played all seasons, outlasting its opponent in two overtimes. The 99th-minute, game-winning goal became the latest goal scored of the season. Â
