Bulldogs Close Northern Road Trip At Iowa
September 04, 2021 | Soccer
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Mississippi State's soccer team will wrap up its Big Ten swing at Iowa on Sunday afternoon with a 1 p.m. CT kickoff. The match will air on Big Ten Network+, which requires a separate subscription.
Â
The Bulldogs (2-2-1) fought to a scoreless draw in their last match at Minnesota on Thursday. The Golden Gophers have yet to allow a goal this season. Maddy Anderson earned her SEC-leading third shutout in that contest.
Â
Iowa (4-1-0) claimed a 5-0 victory over Purdue-Fort Wayne on Thursday night, and Iowa is undefeated in its last 26 games when scoring two goals or more. The Hawkeyes reached the second round of last year's NCAA Tournament, falling to No. 3 UCLA, 2-1.
Â
"Iowa, obviously, made a good run last year," head coach James Armstrong said. "They were Big Ten champions. They're playing on their home field as well. We know that we'll have to turn around after Minnesota to prepare for a very good Iowa team as well."
Â
MSU has posted shutouts in three of five matches and allowed just three goals all year. Offensively, State is led by Onyi Echegini who boasts two goals and 16 shots. Freshmen Hannah Johnson (11 shots, 1 assist) and Ally Perry (8 shots, 1 assist) have also been crucial to the Bulldog attack.
Â
Mississippi State returns home on Sept. 10 for a Friday night kickoff against in-state foe Southern Miss. Fans are encouraged to join the team in a black out game as MSU debuts its new jerseys. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT with the game airing on SEC Network+.
