May 07, 2021 | Women's Tennis
AUSTIN, Texas – The 38th-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis squad fell to No. 31 Arizona State 4-0 Friday in the first round of the NCAA Team Championship at the Texas Tennis Center to conclude team competition for the 2021 season.
With the setback, MSU fell to 6-9 all-time in NCAA Team Championship action. The Bulldogs finished the campaign 11-13 after qualifying for the tournament for the fifth time in the last six seasons in which it has been held.
Arizona State drew first blood by claiming the doubles point. On court 2, ASU's duo of Marianna Argyrokastriti and Sammi Hampton downed State's Emma Antonaki and Marta Falceto 6-2. The Bulldog tried to fight back on the other two courts, which were very tight down the stretch, but the Sun Devils ultimately took a 7-5 victory on court 3 to take the early 1-0 lead, with ASU's Tereza Kolarova and Giulia Mortlet edging Bulldogs Alexandra Mikhailuk and Lilian Poling.
State's tandem of Magda Adaloglou and Chloé Cirotte were down 5-4, on serve, against Ilze Hattingh and Lauryn John-Baptiste on court 1 when the point was clinched.
Arizona State claimed all six first sets in singles –four by close 6-4 margins - and went on to claim the first three singles matches completed to secure the victory.
The Sun Devils' Hampton grabbed the first singles triumph as she handed MSU's Adaloglou a 6-0, 7-5 defeat on court 2. Then, in a Top 100 battle at the top spot in the lineup, State's 33rd-ranked Antonaki was upended in a 6-3, 6-3 decision by the 84th-ranked Sun Devil Hattingh. Domenika Turkovic then clinched the match for Arizona State with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph on court 6 over the Bulldogs' Falceto.
All remaining matches were then suspended.
After dropping the first set 6-4 to John-Baptiste at the No. 3 position, State's Mikhailuk had responded and held a 4-2 lead in the second. On court 4, ASU's Mortlet notched a 6-4 first set over MSU's Poling and the two were tight again in the second at 4-4. At the No. 5 spot, the Sun Devils' Argyrokastriti led the Bulldogs' Cirotte 6-4, 4-1.
