STARKVILLE – Closing out a four-match homestand, the Mississippi State women's tennis team split a doubleheader Sunday, falling to No. 7 Georgia 4-0, before crushing ULM 7-0 at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
MSU now owns a 9-5 record overall, 2-2 in SEC play. Georgia improved to 8-2 and remained perfect 3-0 in conference, while ULM fell to 2-2-1. UGA leads the series 42-0 over the Maroon and White. State leads the Warhawks 16-9 in the series and has claimed 16 of the last 17 matches. The shutout over the ULM marked the third shutout of the season for State.
"We had a full weekend of highly competitive tennis," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "I am happy with the overall effort from our Bulldogs and we are excited to pick up a couple of wins. Georgia was the better team today. I feel like there are some basic things we would have to do extremely well to win at that level. It was a quick turnaround starting another match within one hour after the letdown of a loss. That provided another tough challenge for our girls. I was impressed with the way we came out against ULM. We played extremely solid in doubles and stayed focused through singles."
Georgia notched the doubles point to open the day's first match. UGA's 54th-ranked Morgan Coppoc and Meg Kowalski defeated State's freshman-senior duo of Marta Falceto and Sara Lizariturry 6-2 on court three. MSU's No. 56 Magda Adaloglou and Tamara Racine then fell to No. 30 Anna Hertel and Katarina Jokic of Georgia 6-3 at No. 1. Emma Antonaki and Alexandra Mikhailuk were even with Eleni Christofi and Lea Ma 4-4 at No. 2 when the doubles point was clinched.
UGA took the first set on all courts to start singles and closed out the match in the first three matches complete.
On court four, Mikhailuk fell 6-1, 6-2 to Georgia's Hertel. UGA's 122nd-ranked Christofi bested Falceto 6-3, 6-3 on court 6. Georgia clinched the match on court five as MSU's Valeria Nikolaev dropped her match 6-2, 6-3 to the 85th-ranked Coppoc.
Racine battled 26th-ranked Jokic of UGA on court 1, where Jokic led 7-5, 5-3 when play was suspended. On court 2, MSU's No. 88 Antonaki dropped set one to No. 29 Ma of Georgia 7-5, but the two were tied 5-5 in the second set when the match was suspended. On court 3, after falling to No. 84 Marta Gonzalez in set one, State's Adaloglou had grabbed the second set 6-3 right before the match was stopped.
In the nightcap, State dominated the Warhawks in both singles and doubles competition.
In doubles, the 56th-ranked tandem of Adaloglou and Racine posted an impressive 6-0 defeat over ULM's pair of Emma Billion and Jimena Paula Garbino. On court 3, Falceto and Lizariturry ousted Jelena Lopicic and Giovanna Pereira 6-1. Antonaki and Mikhailuk were ahead 5-2 against Emilia Alfaro and Madalina Grigoriu on court two when the Bulldogs clinched the doubles point.
The Bulldogs didn't take their foot off the gas pedal in singles action as every Bulldog posted straight-set victories. State grabbed an early 2-0 lead after the Warhawks didn't have a player on court 6 and Falceto won by default.
On court 4, Nikolaev defeated Lopicic by a convincing 6-1, 6-0 decision. Then, No. 88 Antonaki – returning to the No. 1 position in the lineup – posted a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over ULM's Garbino to clinch the match for the Bulldogs. It was the sophomore Bulldog's fifth-straight win.
The two teams played out the remainder of the match.
The senior Lizariturry pummeled Pereira on court 5, 6-1, 6-1, before Adaloglou extended her win streak to seven matches on court two with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Billion. Adaloglou has won nine of her last 11 matches. Lizariturry's doubles and singles wins enabled her to move past Mariella Jimenez (1985-88) and into sixth all-time at MSU in career combined victories with 120 (58 singles, 62 doubles).
Mikhailuk won a tight 7-5 set over Grigoriu, before posting a dominant 6-0 triumph in set two to finish off the day and bring the score to the final 7-0 margin.
State hits the road next weekend, traveling to meet Texas A&M and LSU.
