Diamond Dawg Gameday: at Long Beach State

Mississippi State and Long Beach State will meet for the second time in program history and first since 1993

STARKVILLE – After playing its first eight games of the 2020 campaign at Dudy Noble Field, the Mississippi State baseball program will head west for a three-game series at Long Beach State starting on Friday (Feb. 28) at 8 p.m. CT.

The Diamond Dawgs and Dirtbags will continue the series on Saturday (Feb. 29) at 5 p.m. CT and conclude the series at 1 p.m. CT on Sunday (March 1). The series opener will air on the Mississippi State Radio Network, while the final two games will be available on 96.1 FM. Video of each game can be foiund at the links below.

Mississippi State (6-2) and Long Beach State (6-2) have met only once prior to this weekend's series. The Dirtbags won that meeting, 2-1, at the 1993 NCAA East Regional in Tallahassee, Florida.

- Long Beach State enters the weekend with a 6-2 record, including four straight wins. The Dirtbags defeated San Diego, 10-3, in its last outing.
- Last weekend, Dirtbag pitching limited Wake Forrest to five runs on 12 hits in a weekend set. They held Wake Forrest scoreless the last 16 innings of the three-game series.
- Freshman Luiz Ramirez tossed seven innings allowing one unearned run on three hits while recording 12 strikeouts versus Wake Forrest. On the year, Ramirez has 15 strikeouts and just two walks in 11 1/3 innings of work.
- Leading hitter Jacob Hughey returns for his redshirt senior season after batting .324 in 2019.
Series Notes
- Friday will mark the first regular season meeting between Mississippi State and Long Beach State and just the second meeting all-time.
- The only other meeting came in the 1993 NCAA East Regional in Tallahassee, Florida.
- Overall, MSU is 12-17 all-time against the current alignment of the Big West. The Bulldogs have faced five of the nine members of the conference, with CSUN, Cal Poly, UC Irvine and UC Davis the only members it has not faced on the diamond.
