Mangum posts his fourth-career five hit night to move into No. 6 on the SEC career hits list
A seven-run first inning for the Bulldogs (25-5) got the game off to a quick start, but the Warhawks (11-18) didn't go quietly, scoring two runs in each of the third, fourth, fifth and eighth innings. MSU added 10 runs in the fourth and four in the sixth to account for the scoring.
The 21 runs are the most runs scored by a State team since April 20, 2010, when the Diamond Dawgs tallied 27 runs against Alcorn State. It is the seventh time in 2019 that the Maroon and White tallied 15-plus runs in a game.
Senior Jake Mangum moved up another spot on the SEC's all-time hits list with his fourth-career five-hit game. He moved his career total to 333 hits and passed LSU's Blake Dean (332; 2007-10) on the conference's career hits chart. With his first-inning single, Mangum extended his hitting streak to 10 games and his sixth-inning triple gave him 10 for his career and pushed him into a tie for No. 5 on MSU's career chart.
Other notable streaks that were extended on Wednesday included hitting streaks for junior Dustin Skelton (11 games), sophomore Jordan Westburg (8 games) and senior Elijah MacNamee (7 games). MacNamee (25 games), Westburg (14 games), Skelton (14 games) and sophomore Justin Foscue (10 games) all extended reached base streaks that are in double-digits.
Skelton had another grand night at the plate, hitting his fifth home run of the season as part of a two-hit night. His first hit was a first-inning grand slam and he followed that with a two-RBI single in the fourth inning.
Every starter reached base at least twice in the game, with eight of the nine posting hits. All nine starters scored multiple runs in the game, while seven drove in at least one run. Along with Mangum's five-hit effort, freshman Brad Cumbest had three hits, while Foscue, sophomore Rowdey Jordan, MacNamee and Skelton all added two hits apiece.
Freshman Brandon Smith (1-0) collected his first career win with two-thirds of an inning of scoreless work.
Quotable
Head Coach Chris Lemonis
On getting the lead early
"We've been a little behind [early in games] and chasing people, so it was nice to be able to play [with a lead]. I thought Keegan [James] was really good, too. He was able to run out there and pitch well. We had a chance to play with a lead and were able to put another big inning behind it. It lets you relax a little bit."
Junior Dustin Skelton
On what he saw from Keegan James
"I thought he had really good fastball command. I thought he was working at a quick pace with quick tempo. He had his breaking ball working for him today and his changeup looked very good. I think he had that three-pitch mix and that helped him out a lot."
