COLLEGE STATION, Texas – It all seemed too familiar for Mississippi State's Trevor Foshey on Friday night against No. 8 Texas A&M.
Down a break at 5-3 in the third set with his opponent serving for the match, the senior rallied to down the Aggies (19-6, 9-2 SEC) for the second straight meeting, the other coming in his memorable three-set clincher to hand the Bulldogs the 2018 SEC tournament crown. Foshey battled back to force a third-set tiebreaker to decide the match, where he cruised to a 7-1 decision, clinching a dominant 6-1 victory for the seventh-ranked Bulldogs (18-3, 10-1) at the Mitchell Tennis Center. The win was also a momentous one for State head coach Matt Roberts, who earned his 100th career victory at the helm.
"College Station is always a tough place to play and (Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton) does a great job with his teams, so we knew we were in for another great match," Roberts said. "Doubles was very important for us to create momentum. From the beginning of singles, you could feel all eight Bulldogs competing for one another. This was a complete team effort and I'm proud of their commitment to each other tonight.
"Trevor showed so much resiliency coming back in the third set from down 5-2. I guess he just loves his tiebreakers against the Aggies. We will enjoy this win, but we have more work to do Sunday at LSU. Hail State!"
The win marked MSU's second in a row against the Aggies, while also being the Bulldogs' fourth victory in the last five meetings between the SEC's maroon and white-clad squads. State improved to 6-8 in the series against Texas A&M, while also earning its first victory in College Station.
State got off to a roaring start in doubles, going up a break on all three courts early and did not look back in what turned out to be a dominant doubles point. Foshey and Gregor Ramskogler were first off the court for State, taking a convincing 6-2 victory over the Aggie tandem of Austin Abbrat and Hady Habib on court 3. Then, the Bulldogs' third-ranked pair of Nuno Borges and Strahinja Rakic earned a huge break by way of a double-fault on the deciding point to take a decisive 6-1 triumph against the 10th-ranked Texas A&M duo of Juan Carlos Aguilar and Barnaby Smith at No. 1.
That gave MSU an all-too-familiar 1-0 lead going into singles. At the clincher, MSU's No. 15 Niclas Braun and Giovanni Oradini were up a break at 4-3, 30-love on court 2 against the Aggies' Noah Schachter and Valentin Vacherot. The Bulldogs have now won 30 of their last 32 doubles points.
In singles, State powered its way to claim four first sets. The second-ranked, two-time reigning SEC Player of the Year Nuno Borges remained unbeaten in 2019, winning his 20th-straight match, with a 6-3, 6-3 victory against the 46th-ranked Aguilar at the top spot to give MSU a 2-0 lead.
Florian Broska then notched a triumph by an identical margin on court 6, ousting A&M's Guido Marson to put State within one singles win of clinching the victory. The win was Broska's second in a row.
The Aggies notched their lone point of the night when the 61st-ranked Vacherot upended the Bulldogs' Rakic 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 on court 3.
After Foshey claimed his 6-2, 0-6, 7-6(1) match-clinching thriller over Schachter at No. 5, the remaining two matches were played out. Coincidentally, both ended with tiebreakers as well.
On court 2, the Bulldogs' 70th-ranked Oradini fought back after dropping the first set to take a 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(5) victory against No. 77 Habib, while Braun closed out the night by posting a tough 7-5, 7-6(3) triumph over the 98th-ranked Aggie Smith on court 4.
Next Up For MSU …
The Bulldogs will conclude their 2019 regular season at Noon CT on Sunday in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, taking on the No. 36 LSU Tigers, who dropped a tight 4-3 decision to No. 33 Ole Miss on Friday night in Baton Rouge.
