No. 24 MSU Women’s Tennis Wins At Missouri 4-1; Claims Fourth Straight
March 23, 2018 | Women's Tennis
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Despite dropping the doubles point, the 24th-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team (13-5, 4-3 SEC) rallied to win four three-set singles matches to hold off Missouri (11-9, 0-6 SEC) for a 4-1 triumph at the Mizzou Tennis Complex Friday night. The match was played indoors due to rain.
With the victory, the Bulldogs extended their conference win streak to four consecutive matches. That string has come after MSU dropped its first three league matches of 2018, all to current top 20 teams.
State now leads the series with Missouri 6-1 and has won the last four meetings with the Tigers.
"I felt like we were just a little off in doubles and Missouri did a good job of stepping up and capitalizing on their indoor home court advantage," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "They were more aggressive than us. Going indoors on the road is always tricky and playing singles on only four courts creates a whole new dynamic. We did a nice job of settling down and taking all four first sets. At that point, we seemed to let up and lose focus at every position. In the end, it was a little sloppy, but I am proud of how each of our top four were able to get organized and settle down to take the third sets. This was a big win for us to get after coming off such a historic weekend."
The Tigers defended their home courts in doubles Friday despite an early surge from the Bulldogs. On court 1, State's Madison Harrison and Khrystyna Vozniak made quick work of Mizzou's Marta Oliveira and Clare Raley 6-3. The Tigers responded back on court 2 as Amina Ismail and Serena Nash posted their own 6-3 triumph against MSU's Magda Adaloglou and Janina Braun. Clinching the doubles point on court 3, Mizzou's Mackenzy Middlebrooks and Ellie Wright held off State's Sara Lizariturry and Anastasia Rentouli 6-4, giving UM an early 1-0 lead.
With the match indoors, only four singles matches went on at first. Despite the Bulldogs taking all of the first sets on those courts, the Tigers would not go down without a fight, forcing all of those contests to a third set.
First off the courts, the State freshman Adaloglou fought past Mizzou's Taylor Gruber 6-1, 6-7(4), 6-2 at No. 3, tying the match 1-all. On court 1, the MSU senior Harrison notched her first SEC singles win of the year with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 triumph over UM's Nash to give MSU a 2-1 lead.
Following on court 2, the Bulldog newcomer Braun provided a huge momentum shifter in the match's outcome, rallying from 4-3 and a break down in the third set to upend the Tigers' Middlebrooks 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 and give MSU a commanding 3-1 advantage.
Then, in what has become the norm in State's current winning streak, the veteran Rentouli posted her fourth-straight, three-set, match-clinching victory - 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 – versus the Tigers' Wright on court 4. Rentouli, who has now won five matches in a row, came back from down 4-1 and two service breaks in the third set for her win on Friday. She has clinched all four of State's victories in the Bulldogs' current win streak in league play.
The remaining matches on courts 5 and 6 – which started later due to the move indoors - were suspended with State's Lizariturry knotted at 5-all with UM's Ismail on court 5. On court 6, Tiger Oliveira held a very early 2-1 lead against the Bulldogs' Vozniak.
Next Up For MSU…
MSU continues its current four-match SEC road swing this Sunday, March 25, traveling to No. 46 Arkansas.
