Bulldogs Improve To 6-0 With Friday Victory
September 08, 2017 | Soccer
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Scoring early has become a norm for the Mississippi State soccer team.
The Bulldogs (6-0) relied on a goal in the 12th minute from Brooke McKee in addition to scores by MaKayla Waldner and Payton Gruenewald to propel them to a Friday afternoon win against Southeast Missouri State (3-4) on Friday at the MSU Soccer Field.
With the win, State is 6-0 for the first time since 2012. The victory also ties MSU's win total from last season.
"We scored two great goals and I loved our third goal," MSU coach Tom Anagnost said. "I thought Payton did a great job today. There's always some pleasure from winning the game because that's really hard to do."
McKee got the Bulldogs started with her third goal of the year in the 12th minute on the assist from Mallory Eubanks.
About 10 minutes later, Waldner scored her third goal of the year in the 22nd minute, assisted by McKee and Gabriella Coleman.
With their goals, McKee and Waldner tied A.K. Ward for the most goals scored this season. McKee also leads the team in points (8).
State scored its third goal of the contest on Gruenewald's first goal of the season in the 65th minute when she sent a deflected ball into the lower left corner of the goal.
SEMO tried to narrow MSU's lead on a goal by Maddy Cornell assisted by Esmie Gonzales and Katie Lever.
State outshot the Redhawks 17-9 with seven of the shots being on target compared to SEMO's three shots on goal. The Bulldogs also won the corner kick battle 9-4.
