Bulldogs Tie South Alabama, Remain Undefeated
September 10, 2017 | Soccer
STARKVILLE, Miss. – It took a little longer than previous matches to decide the Mississippi State soccer team's battle against South Alabama on Sunday.
MSU (6-0-1) tied USA (2-4-1), 1-1, in double-overtime at the MSU Soccer Field in the Bulldogs' final non-conference tilt before beginning league play. The tie resulted in MSU's longest unbeaten streak since 2012.
"In the end, coaches and players just have to learn from it and get better," MSU coach Tom Anagnost said. "In key moments in the game, we need to have more opportunistic scoring, and that's how you win games. It's a tough pill to swallow, but we're swallowing it and hopefully it'll be a motivator and learning mechanism for us. The good news is that we didn't lose the game and we kept attacking them."
South Alabama scored first in the 17th minute on a goal by Danielle Henley. However, the Bulldogs would not be down for very long.
Courtney Robicheaux scored her second goal of the season nearly a minute later on a free kick when she fired a shot right from just above the 18-yard box past the diving USA keeper. Robicheaux's goal marked a career-high in goals scored in a season for the junior.
With Robicheaux's score, the Bulldogs tied their goal output from last season (17).
Catalina Perez worked all 110 minutes in goal and tallied three saves, including a late save on a shot attempt that she jumped high to haul in.
MSU outshot USA 24-10 with 11 of those 24 shots being on target. For comparison, the Jaguars only had four shots on goal on the afternoon. State also won the corner kick battle, 8-1.
