Bulldogs Tie LSU In SEC Road Contest

BATON ROUGE, La. – Facing a 2-1 deficit with under four minutes remaining, MaKayla Waldner gave Mississippi State what it needed to keep going.

The sophomore scored her third goal in the last two contests as MSU (7-1-2, 1-1-1 SEC) tied LSU (7-1-2, 0-1-2) 2-2 in a Southeastern Conference match at the LSU Soccer Stadium on Sunday.

"I know there is still more in each of us to give to make this season truly special," MSU coach Tom Anagnost said. "We went through some adversity today which is a good thing. When we play with urgency we are a good team. I give our players credit for fighting back after going down. It shows the character growth of this team and I'm proud of that. I love this team."

The draw resulted in the first time State got a point against LSU since 2004 and the first time versus the Tigers on the road since 2001.

State nearly had its first goal of the match when a Waldner shot was knocked out of play by LSU goalkeeper Caroline Brockmeier, forcing an MSU corner kick.

Just 15 minutes into the contest, lightning was detected in the area, forcing a 40-minute delay.

Following the first delay, Mallory Eubanks put the Bulldogs on the board first in the 21^st minute when she fired a shot that buzzed right past a diving Brockmeier into the right corner of the net.

Lightning was again detected in the area just over a minute after Eubanks' goal, forcing the teams back inside for another weather delay.

State took the lead to halftime, but LSU knotted it up in the 49^th minute on a goal by Alex Thomas, who tapped the ball into the right corner of the net.

Thomas netted her second goal of the contest on a penalty kick goal in the 64^th minute to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.

Waldner nearly tied it up in the 84^th minute when she attempted a side-footed shot that was barely stopped by a diving Brockmeier.

The sophomore followed through on her next chance in the 87^th minute when she took a cross from Sam Blanchard and headed it into the bottom right corner of the goal to tie up the game and send it to overtime.

Catalina Perez reeled in three saves in net for the Maroon and White, including a spectacular save off of her left leg in the 97^th minute that prevented Thomas from scoring the game-winner.

State outshot LSU 12-8 and out-cornered the Tigers 10-4.

Next Up For MSU

The Bulldogs will retake the field at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29 to host Auburn. Admission to the match at the MSU Soccer Field is free and the contest will be streamed live on SEC Network+.
