MSU Falls In Game One Against No. 8 Alabama
March 17, 2017 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – In game one of their SEC home-opening series, the Mississippi State Bulldogs (21-6, 1-3 SEC) fell in an 11-3 battle to the No. 8 Alabama Crimson Tide (27-2, 4-0 SEC) on Friday night at Nusz Park.
Alabama tallied six runs in the first three innings to grab the early lead, led by a three-run home run in the first inning.
The Dogs answered back in the third, as Reggie Harrison blasted her fourth homer of the season, a two-run bomb over the wall in left. State threatened to keep the scoring going later in the inning, but the Tide were able to escape after MSU put two runners on.
Regan Green shut down Alabama in the fourth, working around a two-out single to keep the visitors scoreless.
UA would strike again in the fifth, driving in one on an RBI double to right and another on a hit by pitch. An error would lead to three more runs coming home for Alabama.
MSU turned up the heat in the final frame, as the Dogs looked to rally back into the contest. Behind three-straight walks and a raucous crowd, State tacked on a run thanks to a Caroline Seitz grounder that drove home Harrison. State would again load the bases after pinch hitter Alexis Silkwood drew the fourth walk of the inning. However, Alabama once again escaped, getting a strikeout to close the game and seal an 11-3 victory in five innings.
Green threw 5.0 innings of work, striking out two and walking three. Five Bulldogs tallied a hit on the night, led by Harrison's two-run homer, which extends her career-high hitting streak to eight-straight games.
Harrison (11-straight games), Golden (13-straight games) and Calyn Adams (14-straight games) also each extended their career-high streaks of reaching base safely.
The Bulldogs and Crimson Tide return to action tomorrow with a 6 p.m. CT showdown. Fans can catch the action on SEC Network +, which can be accessed through WatchESPN.com or the ESPN app.
