Brooke McKee and MaKayla Waldner combined for MSU's 3 goals at Georgia
McKee Brace Leads MSU To Victory At Georgia
October 19, 2017 | Soccer
ATHENS, Ga. – 17 seconds.
That's how long it took for Brooke McKee and MaKayla Waldner to score two second half goals to help propel Mississippi State to a 3-0 victory against Georgia on Thursday at the Turner Soccer Complex.
"We had a great overall team performance tonight," MSU coach Tom Anagnost said. "We were focused, dangerous in the attack and didn't give them much. I'm really proud of this team and who they are."
State nearly broke the scoreless tie in the ninth minute when MaKayla Waldner fired a rocket that was punched away by Georgia goalkeeper Louise Hogrell.
The Maroon and White struck first in the 15th minute on McKee's goal off of a rebound from Waldner's shot on an MSU corner kick.
State doubled its lead in the 56th minute on McKee's second goal of the night—an absolute laser on a free kick from just above the 18-yard box. The junior from Madison, Ala., now has six goals on the year.
Just 17 seconds later, Waldner netted her eighth goal of the year when she won a one-on-one battle against Hogrell. The two second-half goals by MSU were the second-fastest consecutive goals scored in program history.
Catalina Perez was stellar in goal for the Bulldogs en route to earning her fifth shutout of the year, which ties her for third in program history for shutouts in a season.
In the 59th minute, Perez kept Georgia off the board with one of her four saves on the night by falling on a UGA shot.
Perez, as she has done all year, displayed her athleticism by leaping to pick off a cross to prevent a scoring opportunity by Georgia.
Finally, in the 88th minute, the Boca Raton, Fla., native earned her fourth save of the contest by punching a Georgia shot over the net.
"We are a good team," Anagnost said. "I love this group and it is one that can accomplish anything they put their mind to."
Next Up For MSU…
State will be back in action on Sunday at the MSU Soccer Field, hosting Ole Miss at 4 p.m. The match will be televised nationally on SEC Network and fans will have an opportunity to take a picture with the Egg Bowl Trophy.
