No. 21 MSU Women?s Tennis Falls 4-2 To No. 5 Vanderbilt In SEC Quarters
April 22, 2016 | Women's Tennis
Baton Rouge, La. – In a back-and-forth affair, the seventh-seeded and 21st-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team (17-8) fell to second-seeded and fifth-ranked Vanderbilt (19-4) 4-2 in the quarterfinals of the 2016 SEC Championship Friday. The setback broke a five-match winning streak for the Bulldogs.
To start the day in doubles, the Commodore tandem of Frances Altick and Astra Sharma made quick work of State's duo of Georgiana Patrasc and Anastasia Rentouli 6-0 on court 2. The Bulldogs tried to battle back, tying both courts 2 and 3 late in the set. But a close battle at the No. 1 position would see Vandy's 13th-ranked pair of Sydney Campbell and Courtney Campbell holding off MSU's 35th-ranked tandem of Madison Harrison and Kristina Vozniak 7-5 to clinch the doubles point and give VU a 1-0 lead. The remaining doubles match was suspended with Bulldogs Jennifer Brown and Jasmine Lee holding a 6-5 lead on court 3.
In singles, State's 14th-ranked Lee would be the first off the court as she dominated Vandy's 19th-ranked Campbell 6-0, 6-0 at the top spot to tie the match 1-1, winning her fourth straight. The Commodores would retake the lead when Fernanda Contreras ousted MSU's Vozniak 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 5 position.
MSU would tie the match again as Harrison posted a big upset over VU's 26th-ranked Sharma 6-2, 6-3 on court 3 to make the score 2-2. It was Harrison's fifth consecutive victory.
Vandy then found its rhythm posting back-to-back wins to clinch the match as No. 13 Altick defeated State's No 32 Patrasc 6-2, 6-1 on court 2 (ending an eight-match win streak for the MSU senior) and Commodore Georgina Sellyn held off MSU's Brown 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6 to make the final score 4-2.
The remaining match was suspended with Vandy's Colton holding a 7-5, 0-3 lead against Bulldog No. 117 Rentouli, with the State freshman battling back in the second set.
The Bulldogs now wait to see where they will continue postseason play in the 2016 NCAA Team Championship. The selection show for this year's national championship field will be held Tuesday, May 3, at 4 p.m. CT and will be streamed live on NCAA.com.
