TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – To end its weekend in Alabama, the 27th-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team (12-6, 3-5 Southeastern Conference) swept No. 48 Alabama (4-12, 0-8 SEC) 7-0 on the road Saturday afternoon.
The win was State's second straight over the Crimson Tide (MSU upset then No. 6 UA last season) and it was MSU's first win over Alabama in Tuscaloosa since 1999.
The Bulldogs started the day with a dominant showing in doubles. State's duo of Jasmine Lee and Louise Ronaldson made quick work of the Tide's tandem of Aryn Greene and Joanna Nena Savva 6-1 on court two. Following at the No. 3 position, the Bulldogs' 61st-ranked pair of Georgiana Patrasc and Anastasia Rentouli ousted UA's Andie Daniell and Danielle Spielmann 6-1 to clinch the doubles point and give MSU a 1-0 lead. The No. 1 doubles match was suspended at 4-1 in favor of Bama.
MSU carried that momentum into singles, taking four of the first six sets, and ultimately claiming wins on every court.
State's 13th-ranked Lee made quick work of the Crimson Tide's No. 44 Erin Routliffe 6-2, 6-2 on court 1 to extend MSU's lead to 2-0. At the No. 5 position, Bulldog Kristina Vozniak down Bama's Spielmann 6-2, 6-3 to give State a solid 3-0 lead.
MSU's No. 100 Rentouli then got back in the win column, clinching the match in straight sets at No. 4 over the Tide's Savva 6-2, 6-2, to snap a four-match losing skid.
State would claim wins in all three of the remaining matches of the day as well. At the No. 6 position, the Bulldogs' Jennifer Brown retired her foe Bennett Dunn 6-3, 6-4. In come-from-behind fashion, MSU's No. 77 Patrasc and Madison Harrison won their matches on courts 2 and 3, respectively. At No. 3, Harrison rallied to defeat Natalia Maynetto 0-6, 6-2, 6-2 while Patrasc closed out the day's scoring by overcoming the Crimson Tide's Daniell 1-6, 6-3, 6-0 on court 2.
“I am proud of the complete effort from our team today,” head coach Daryl Greenan said. “We made an adjustment in our doubles lineup, which helped us pick up the opening point in both duels this weekend. We had to fight and work our way into the singles and I am proud of Georgiana and Madison for digging in for the win after losing one sided first sets. The league is extremely tough this year and after losing a few close battles this was a huge win for us.”
The Bulldogs return home to take on No. 5 Vanderbilt on Thursday, March 31, at 3 p.m. and then welcome No. 23 Kentucky on Saturday, April 2, at 1 p.m.
