STARKVILLE, Miss. – After earning a 1-0 lead by winning doubles play, the 22nd-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team had to suspend its match against No. 9 South Carolina late Friday afternoon due to rain and lightning. The match is scheduled to resume Saturday, March 19, at 12 p.m. CT at MSU's A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
State posted wins at the top two doubles positions for its early lead in the match. After Gamecocks Ingrid Martins and Ximena Siles Luna downed State's 70th-ranked Jennifer Brown and Kristina Vozniak 6-2 at the No. 3 spot, State's 43rd-ranked duo of Jasmine Lee and Louise Ronaldson evened things with a 6-3 win over South Carolina's Caroline Dailey and Brigit Folland at No. 2. Clinching doubles for State were 34th-ranked Bulldogs Madison Harrison and Georgiana Patrasc, holding off USC's 54th-ranked team of Hadley Berg and Paige Cline 6-4 at the top spot.
The teams got just a couple of games into singles on all courts when a lightning strike, soon followed by heavy rain, suspended play.
MSU (11-3, 2-2 Southeastern Conference) is looking for its first top 10 win since a 4-3 upset of No. 6 Alabama last spring. South Carolina (12-2, 4-0 SEC) had won seven straight contests coming into Starkville.
