February 27, 2016 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – To close out its 2016 non-conference slate, the 25th-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team (9-1) defeated Louisiana Lafayette (6-6) 4-0 and No. 73 Southern Miss (7-1) 6-1 Saturday to extend its win streak to six matches entering Southeastern Conference play next weekend.
The Bulldogs began the day by winning in doubles once again, as the tandem of Caroline Kelly and Georgiana Patrasc captured a 6-0 victory against Juliette Clement and Elena Sava on court 3. At the No. 2 position, MSU's duo of Anastasia Rentouli and Kristina Vozniak downed Abby Johnson and Alexandra Way 6-2 to clinch the doubles point and give MSU a 1-0 lead. On court 1, Jasmine Lee and Louise Ronaldson's match was suspended at 5-4 in favor of the Bulldogs.
In singles action, the 11th-ranked Lee made quick work of the Ragin' Cajuns' Kelly Drew 6-0, 6-2 on court 1 to extend State's lead to 2-0. At the No. 4 position, MSU's 43rd-ranked Rentouli downed ULL's Dana Brankovic 6-0, 6-1 to give State a solid 3-0 lead.
MSU's Vozniak then clinched the match in straight sets at No. 5 over the Ragin' Cajuns' Johnson 6-4, 6-2.
The remaining matches for Madison Harrison, Patrasc and Ronaldson were suspended after Vozniak's victory on court 5 which clinched the 4-0 victory.
In the afternoon cap of Saturday's doubleheader, State delivered Southern Miss' first lost of the season by a 6-1 count. Much like the previous match, the Bulldogs began by claiming the doubles point. MSU's duo of Lee and Ronaldson blanked the Golden Eagles' Claudia Castella and Rikeetha Pereira 6-0 on court 2. At the No. 3 position, the Bulldog tandem of 53rd-ranked Jennifer Brown and Vozniak upended Southern Miss' Tjasa Jerse and Elena Roca 6-1 to clinch the doubles point and give MSU a 1-0 lead. The remaining match was suspended 4-2 in favor of MSU.
In singles, the 11th-ranked Lee breezed over the Golden Eagles' Carolin Drescher 6-2, 6-0 on court 1 to extend MSU's lead to 2-0. At the No. 5 position, Vozniak upended Southern Miss' Castella 6-1, 6-3 to give State a 3-0 lead.
MSU's No. 43 Rentouli clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over the Golden Eagles' Jerse on court 4.
State would claim wins in two of the remaining three matches of the day as well. At the No. 3 position, the Bulldogs' No. 103 Patrasc retired her foe Pereira 6-1, 6-1, extending her winning streak to 10 straight matches. On court 6, MSU's Brown ousted Southern Miss' Roca 6-3, 6-2. In a back and forth battle at No. 2, the Golden Eagles' Alex Kitchen held off State's Harrison 7-6(4), 1-6, 1-0(5), providing Southern Miss its lone point of the afternoon.
“We picked up two wins and only had one loss on the day,” head coach Daryl Greenan said. “We faced some adversity coming into this week and the girls handled it well. We switched up doubles in the first match and they responded well and dominated in singles. The overall performance was good and we picked up two wins before heading into conference play.”
Since losing to now ninth-ranked Duke over a month ago the Bulldogs have outscored their six opponents since then 37-2, including four shutouts.
MSU continues its homestand by hosting SEC foes Tennessee on Friday, March 4, at 3 p.m. CT and Georgia on Sunday, March 6, at 1 p.m. CT.
