Bulldogs Rally Behind Holman, Peters To Beat UTEP

The Bulldogs finished the four-day event with a 2-1 record, bouncing back nicely from an opening-round defeat to Central Florida.
Tyson Carter added nine points on a 3-of-6 night from 3-point range, while Quinndary Weatherspoon also added nine points. Mario Kegler had a team-high eight rebounds, while Peters had a team-high four assists.
The Miners quickly built a 15-4 lead less than six minutes into the contest. Holman had 14 of the team's first 18 points as the Bulldogs battled back for an 18-18 tie. The lead switched back and forth a couple of times before a 33-33 deadlock took the place at halftime.
In the second half, the Bulldogs fell down 43-35 before a run fueled by Peters and Carter got the Maroon and White back into the contest.
MSU scored nine straight points with two Weatherspoon free throws giving the Bulldogs a 44-43. Lead. A basket by Holman with 5:23 left gave the Bulldogs the lead for good.
For the contest, the Bulldogs hit 21 of 52 shots from the field (40.4 percent), 7 of 20 shots from 3-point range (35.0 percent) and 12 of 14 shots from the foul line (85.7 percent). The Miners hit 19 of 51 shots from the field (37.3 percent), 4 of 22 shots from 3-point range (18.2 percent) and 12 of 20 shots from the foul line (60.0 percent).
The teams were even at 34 rebounds. MSU had 12 assists and turnovers, while UTEP had 10 assists and 12 turnovers. UTEP received 15 points from Dominic Artis and 12 points from Matt Willms.
MSU will host Lehigh at 7 p.m. Friday in Humphrey Coliseum.
