March 29, 2015 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Despite clinching the doubles point to open the match, No. 35 Mississippi State couldn't hold off LSU's response in singles, as the Bulldogs fell 4-3 at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre on Sunday.
With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 13-6 overall and 3-6 in the SEC. LSU improved to 14-7 on the season and 5-4 in SEC play.
It was a tight affair on all three courts for most of doubles, but LSU grabbed the first win on No. 3, as Timea Guibe and Naomi Tran fell 8-5 to the LSU tandem of Amanda Atanasson and Skylar Holloway. However, the Bulldogs responded with a win on No. 1, as the Bulldog duo of Martina Frantova and Georgiana Patrasc earned an 8-6 victory against the 32nd-ranked Joana Vale Costa and Noel Scott.
From that point, all eyes turned to No. 2, where Jasmine Lee and Louise Ronaldson fought back from a 7-5 deficit to take a thrilling 8-7 (1) decision against the 66th-ranked Skylar Kuykendall and Abby Owens, clinching the doubles point for the Bulldogs.
However, LSU regained the momentum in singles, as the Tigers took five of six first sets. State's 56th-ranked Lee suffered just her third loss of the season on court one, falling 6-1, 6-1 to LSU's 39th-ranked Vale Costa. The Tigers then gained a 2-1 advantage, as No. 81 Patrasc fell 6-1, 6-3 on court two to LSU's No. 69 Kuykendall.
After MSU's Frantova won 6-3, 6-3 on No. 4 over Scott, LSU earned its third point of the match, as MSU's Ronaldson fell 7-5, 6-1 on court three to Owens and the Tigers led 3-2.
The Tigers then got the clinching point on No. 5, as LSU's Ella Taylor held off State's Jennifer Brown 6-1, 7-5. State would gain the final point of the day in a default, with Guibe leading Tiger Holloway 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 at No. 6.
Mississippi State will round out its 2015 regular season home slate on Wednesday, as the Bulldogs welcome No. 39 Auburn to the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre in a 2 p.m. contest which was rescheduled from earlier in the season. The Tigers (12-9/2-7 SEC) are coming off of a 4-1 upset against No. 18 Kentucky on Sunday.
