March 21, 2015 | Women's Tennis
COLUMBIA, S.C. – After dropping the doubles point, the No. 27 Mississippi State Bulldogs made a late push in singles, but it wasn't enough, as the Bulldogs fell in a close 4-3 battle at the hands of No. 43 South Carolina Friday evening on the road.
With the loss, the Bulldogs' four-match winning streak came to an end, as MSU dropped to 13-4 and 3-3 in the SEC.
South Carolina came right out of the gate in doubles, taking a pair of wins on courts one and three to claim the doubles point. The Gamecocks' 53rd-ranked duo of Hadley Berg and Caroline Dailey took an 8-3 decision on No. 1 against MSU's tandem of Martina Frantova and Naomi Tran. The clincher followed on No. 3, as Timea Guibe and Louise Ronaldson fell 8-3 to USC's Elixane Lechemia and Ximena Siles Luna.
Doubles play was suspended after the clinch, with Jasmine Lee and Georgiana Patrasc trailing 6-4 on court two to South Carolina's 45th-ranked tandem of Meghan Blevins and Brigit Folland.
After the Gamecocks opened singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win on No. 3 against Frantova, MSU responded by taking wins on courts one and two. Patrasc earned her second consecutive SEC victory with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Dailey on No. 2, while Lee claimed her second ranked win of the season, defeating No. 74 Lechemia 7-5, 6-2 on court one.
However, the Gamecocks quickly broke the 2-2 tie, as MSU's Guibe suffered her first loss of the 2015 season, 6-3, 6-3, at the hands of Luna at the No. 6 spot. Bulldog freshman Jennifer Brown would then earn a 7-6(3), 6-0 victory on No. 5 to tie the match once again at 3-3 and send the focus to court four, where Blevins completed a 6-2, 6-3 decision over MSU's Ronaldson, sealing the win for the Gamecocks.
Mississippi State will now set its sights on Sunday, as the Bulldogs travel to Gainesville for their toughest challenge of the season to date, a 12 p.m. CT showdown against the No. 2 Florida Gators. Live stats will be provided at gatorzone.com.
