March 01, 2015 | Women's Tennis
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Following Friday's close effort against Vanderbilt, the 63rd-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team came up short once again on Sunday, falling 5-2 at the hands of No. 25 Kentucky on the road.
MSU falls to 9-3 on the season and 0-2 in the SEC.
Kentucky hit the gas pedal in doubles and never looked back Sunday, as the MSU duo of Jasmine Lee and Georgiana Patrasc suffered their first loss of the season, 8-4, to UK's Mami Adachi and Aldila Sutjiadi. The Wildcats followed by taking the clincher on court two, as Martina Frantova and Naomi Tran fell 8-1 to UK's Kirsten Lewis and Nadia Ravita. Play was suspended at No. 3 following the clinch, with Timea Guibe and Louise Ronaldson trailing 5-2 to Kelsey Dieters and Taylor Lederman.
UK carried its fast start over into singles play, as the Wildcats took three of the first four sets on courts one through four. Despite fighting back to force a nail-biting tiebreaker, Frantova was the first to fall on court three, dropping a 6-3, 7-6 (5) decision to UK's Adachi. After falling behind early 5-1 in the first set, the 75th-ranked Patrasc fought back to force a set tiebreaker at No. 1, but couldn't pull out the victory, falling 7-6 (4), 6-4 to Ravita. The Wildcats later earned the clincher at No. 4, as Ronaldson fell 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 to Dieters.
In similar fashion to their previous loss, the Bulldogs once again rallied after the clinch, winning two of the final three matches on court. After suffering her first loss of the season on Friday, Lee responded in a big way on Sunday, earning a gritty 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-2 victory against Sutjiadi. Guibe also earned a 7-5, 6-2 win against Lederman, remaining unbeaten in dual match play at 9-0. MSU Brown's lost in a tough three-setter at No. 5 in the day's only other match.
Mississippi State will return home to host Missouri this Friday, March 6. The match is slated for a 3 p.m. start, and will kickoff a five-match homestand for the Bulldogs. Live stats will be provided on hailstate.com
