Bulldog Women?s Tennis Downs Samford; Improves To 7-1

STARKVILLE, Miss. – After taking three of the first four matches of the day, freshman Jennifer Brown delivered the match clincher at No. 5 to give the No. 71 Mississippi State women's tennis team a 4-1 victory against Samford on Thursday.
With the win, Mississippi State won its fourth consecutive match and improved to 7-1 in dual match play. The win also moved the Bulldogs to 2-1 in indoor matches this season as the match was played at McCarthy Gymnasium due to bitter temperatures.
The match opened with singles play, as 77th-ranked Georgiana Patrasc – this week's SEC Player of the Week - took a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 1 against Samford's Stephanie N'tcha, moving her to 7-1 in dual match play. Sophomore Jasmine Lee followed on court 2, battling through a close first set, en route to a 7-6 (2), 6-0 win against SU's Yasmeen Ebada.
MSU would then take a 3-0 lead, thanks to Martina Frantova's impressive 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 3 against Jessica Northcutt. One of the closest battles came at the No. 4 slot, where MSU's Louise Ronaldson battled back from dropping the first set, taking a 5-4 lead in the second. However, it wasn't enough, as Ronaldson eventually fell to Carita Moolman 6-3, 7-5.
MSU would respond at No. 5, though, as Brown earned her third match-clinching win of the season, defeating SU's Iva Parapunova, 6-2, 6-2. The win also moved Brown to 5-1 at the No. 5 position.
Due to the clinch, play was suspended on court 6, with State sophomore Timea Guibe leading 6-2, 2-0 against Savannah Wood.
“We earned a convincing win against a solid team today,” said MSU coach Daryl Greenan. “Our confidence is growing and we are playing with a little more authority each and every week.”
Mississippi State will now set its sights on Saturday, as the Bulldogs host a doubleheader against Middle Tennessee State and Alcorn State. Play is slated to begin at 10 a.m. and live stats will be provided at hailstate.com
