MSU Women?s Tennis Blanks Winthrop 7-0 To Earn First Road Win

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Despite an almost two-week break from action, the 74th-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team (5-1) picked up right where it left off, earning an impressive 7-0 road victory against Winthrop (2-6) on Friday.
With the Bulldogs taking a win at the No. 3 doubles slot by default, Jasmine Lee and Georgiana Patrasc delivered the clincher with a 6-2 victory at No. 2 against Winthrop's Alice Garcia and Tijana Uzelac. The Bulldogs would fall at the No. 1 position, however, as Martina Frantova and Naomi Tran dropped a 6-3 decision to Ekin Gunaysu and Mariana Humberg.
After opening singles play with a default win on court six, 77th-ranked junior Georgiana Patrasc picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 against Gunaysu for a 3-0 MSU lead. Frantova would follow with the match clincher on court three, holding off a feisty effort from Uzelac for a 6-1, 7-6 victory.
Lee would follow the clinch with a 6-3, 7-6 decision at No. 2 against Winthrop's Alice Garcia. From there, the Bulldogs would preserve the sweep, as freshmen Jennifer Brown and Louise Ronaldson scored a pair of come-from-behind three-set wins. For the second consecutive match, Ronaldson was able to rebound after dropping the first set, taking a 3-6, 6-3, 1-0(7) victory at No. 4 over Humberg. Brown also battled back in a big way on court five, earning a 2-6, 6-2, 1-0(5) win over Monica Aguado to stay unbeaten (6-0) in dual match play this spring.
“It was a very solid effort and a good win for us today,” said coach Daryl Greenan. “I am proud of the way we are battling on every court. Today's win should provide a little confidence boost for our younger players.”
Mississippi State will have a short turnaround before its next competition, hitting the court once again Saturday at Noon CT, facing East Tennessee State in a neutral site affair on the Winthrop campus. Live updates, when available, can be found on the team's Twitter account, HailStateWT.
