Bulldogs Defeat Cornell To Open Ivy League Kick-off

MSU moved to 3-0 on the season with the win, and will face tournament host Dartmouth tomorrow at 8 a.m. CT.
Doubles play got off to a fast start for the Bulldogs, as the sophomore-senior combination of Martina Frantova and Naomi Tran defeated Cornell's Lizzie Stewart and Dena Tanenbaum, 6-4. Seconds later, the Bulldogs would clinch the doubles point at No. 3, as Jennifer Brown and Georgiana Patrasc took a 6-4 decision against Priyanka Shah and Jane Stewart. Doubles would conclude with Timea Guibe and Louise Ronaldson falling 6-3 on court 2.
MSU got off to a fast start in singles play as well, with the 76th-ranked Patrasc taking a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 1 against Tanenbaum. Frantova would be the next to finish on court 2, defeating Lizzie Stewart in an impressive 6-2, 6-2 decision. The freshman Brown would deliver the match clincher at No. 4, defeating Shah 6-1, 6-4.
Guibe also put on a gritty performance at No. 5, coming from back from a 4-1 deficit in the first set to take a 7-6 (4), 6-2 win against Jane Stewart. Ronaldson and Alex Corder also put forth strong efforts, but both players would wrap up singles play with two tough losses.
“We played a little tight in doubles today,” said head coach Daryl Greenan. “(But) we did a great job in singles. It was a solid win for us today.”
