January 26, 2014 | Women's Tennis
With the win, State improved to 2-1 on the season and finished with a 1-1 split in this weekend's action.
The Bulldogs kicked off the match in thrilling fashion, earning the doubles point, thanks to an intense 7-6(2) tiebreak win on Court 1 from Timea Guibe and Alexandra Perper over the Spartans' Sabastiani Leon Chao and Marie Klocker. The MSU duo of Georgiana Patrasc and Naomi Tran also picked up a big win for the Bulldogs, edging Gaelle Rey and Jessica Willett 7-5 on Court 2 just prior to the win on No. 1.
In singles action, the scoring began on Court 5, where Bulldog Roseline Dion remained undefeated in 2014, rolling for her third consecutive straight-set win at 6-2, 6-0 over San Jose State's Willett. From there, three straight matches would come down to super tiebreakers to determine their outcome, setting the stage for an intense battle.
The Spartans claimed the first of the three on Court 4, as Julianna Bacelar edged Tran 2-6, 6-2, 1-0(8), to give San Jose State their first point of the day and cutting the team score lead down to 3-1. The Bulldogs responded by claiming Court 2, where Perper rallied to defeat Chao 3-6, 6-4, 1-0(1), extending the Bulldogs lead to 3-1. On Court 6, MSU newcomer Rosalinda Calderon gave an impressive effort in just her second collegiate match, but would fall 3-6, 7-5, 1-0(7) to SJSU's Deleval.
But the Bulldogs would ultimately clinch the match on Court 3, as Guibe defeated Rey 6-4, 7-5, giving Mississippi State the 4-2 win. Tied at 5-5 in the second set, Guibe held a crucial game to 6-5 and then broke at love to hand State the team victory.
Play on Court 1 was suspended at that point.
“It was a great battle today as expected,” said head coach Daryl Greenan. “Winning the doubles point proved to be critical for us. We started off strong in singles, but had to battle extremely hard to finish. I give San Jose State credit for their fighting spirit and I am very proud of our girls for their effort in the hard-earned win.”
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 3 p.m., as they host Tennessee-Martin at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre on the MSU campus.
