Mississippi State Dominates Lipscomb For 14-4 Road Win
March 16, 2011 | Baseball
The Maroon and White pounded out 14 hits to take victory in its first road contest of the season. The Bulldogs improved to 14-4 overall, while the Bisons fell to 7-10. MSU will spend the remainder of its spring break in the Music City as the Bulldogs tangle with second-ranked Vanderbilt this weekend to open Southeastern Conference play.
Routt made his first appearance of the season. With a strict pitch count, the junior left-hander worked 3.1 innings, allowing two hits and one run (earned), with four strikeouts and no walks. Routt retired the first nine batters he faced while using only 40 pitches.
Luis Pollorena followed in relief, logging his longest outing of the season. While earning the win, Pollorena (2-0) allowed four hits and one run (earned), with five strikeouts and one walk. C.C. Watson threw the ninth inning.
The Bulldogs removed early doubt from the contest by scoring once in the first inning, four times in the second inning and three times in the third inning. MSU would later score twice in the fifth inning and add four more scores in the seventh inning.
In the opening inning, the Bulldogs did load the bases but only managed a sacrifice-fly by Jonathan Ogden.
Nick Vickerson started things in the second inning with a two-out solo home run, his second of the year. Cody Freeman doubled and back-to-back walks by Jarrod Parks and Daryl Norris loaded the bases. Ogden drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run. A two-run single by C.T. Bradford capped the second inning.
For MSU, a Ryan Collins double started the big third inning. Collins took third on a passed ball, while Vickerson followed with a one-out walk. After Vickerson stole second base, Freeman struck for a two-run single, and Parks added an RBI-double.
The early offense would be more than enough for the MSU pitching trio. The Bisons could not counter on the mound. In addition to allowing 14 hits, Lipscomb pitching also issued 13 walks and hit another batter.
The Bulldog fifth inning included an RBI-triple by Parks and RBI-single by Norris. In the seventh inning, Jaron Shepherd had an RBI-single, while Wes Thigpen added an RBI-double.
Freeman had three hits to pace the MSU offensive attack. Parks, Norris, Shepherd and Thigpen each added multiple hits.
Lipscomb managed eight hits, with no player recording more than one. Starting pitcher Chris Nunn (1-1) was lifted in the second inning and took the loss.
This weekend's MSU-Vanderbilt series has start times of 6 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday from Hawkins Field.
