State Women's Tennis Falls To No. 20 USC

COLUMBIA, SC. - After several lightning strikes in the Columbia, SC., area, play was moved indoors to the USC Field House Sunday afternoon, where Mississippi State's women' s tennis team (9-7, 1-5 SEC) fell to 20th-ranked South Carolina (12-4, 5-1 SEC), 5-0.
Mississippi State put up a strong fight in doubles, taking the match at court No. 2 where the Lady Bulldog team of Olesya Tsigvintseva and Natalia Mayuk ousted the USC duo of Miljana Jocic and Rita Maisak, 8-3.
That win was all MSU could muster; however, as the remaining Lady Bulldog tandems fell at the first and third positions. No. 20 Dijana Stojic and Ana Marija Zubori of South Carolina defeated the MSU team of Radka Ferancova and Danielle Terpko, 8-4, while the State duo of Mariia Ryzhova and Valeriya Makarycheva fell, 8-5, to Anya Morgina and Adriana Pereira.
In singles, South Carolina took wins at the first four courts to take the match over MSU. The series of Gamecock triumphs started at the second position, where State's Tsigvintseva was outlasted by Stojic, 6-1, 6-0. That win was followed by Morgina's 7-5, 6-1 victory over Mayuk at the third position and the match-clinching 6-3, 6-1 win by USC's Pereira against Makarycheva. The Gamecocks then added onto their 4-0 lead with Zubori's 6-4, 6-1 triumph over State's Ferancova at the top spot.
With the match in hand for South Carolina, play was then suspended at the fifth and sixth positions.
Mississippi State returns to action this weekend for a pair of home matches. The Lady Bulldogs play host to Georgia on Friday at Noon CT, and then will entertain Tennessee on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.
