Makarycheva Delivers Match-Clincher In 5-2 Win Over ULL
February 27, 2010 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Lady Bulldog senior Valeriya Makarycheva won an exciting three-set thriller Saturday afternoon to give the Mississippi State women's tennis team (6-1) its fifth-straight win and a 5-2 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette (2-3).
"It was a tough match today, but I am really proud of our girls," said Lady Bulldog head coach Daryl Greenan. "I thought they adjusted real well to some changes we made, and I give them a lot of credit for again finding a way to win."
In doubles, Mississippi State started with a win at court No. 3, as the tandem of Natalia Mayuk and Valeriya Makarycheva ousted the ULL duo of Shelby Dufrene and Briggitt Marcovich 8-3. From there, MSU split the final two courts and took the point with a win at the second position where Radka Feranocva and Danielle Terpko defeated the Ragin Cajun pair of Milou Israel and Audrey Woolan 8-4. Meanwhile, Olesya Tsigvintseva and Mariia Ryzhova fell 8-5 to the ULL's team of Julie Mazinova and Mia Gordon at the top position.
With the elusive doubles point in hand, Mississippi State headed to the singles courts looking to claim its fifth-straight win of the season. The Lady Bulldogs began singles strong, with first-set wins on courts three, four, five and six and lone first-frame losses at the top two positions.
As it has been in the last two outings for MSU, it was a back-and-forth battle in singles. Courts four and five were able to maintain their early leads, as the Lady Bulldogs claimed victories at each position. Mayuk defeated ULL's Gordon 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4, while State's Terpko took a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Dufrene at the fifth position. Tsigvintseva and Ferancova then took tough losses at the top positions, leaving the match in the hands of Makarycheva and Jordan Zachary.
It was Makarycheva who clinched the match, but not before she battled back hard in a tight affair. After losing the second set of her contest, Makarycheva fell behind 5-3 in the last. She rebounded; however, to take four consecutive games and clinch the match over ULL's Israel with a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 triumph.
Equally as exciting was Zachary's contest on court No. 6. After losing a tie-breaker second set, Zachary finally ousted her ULL counterpart to pick up her second win of the season in a 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 contest.
Mississippi State's women's tennis team will have a quick turnaround, as it plays host to Southern Mississippi Sunday at 1 p.m. CT. Admission to all MSU home matches is free.
