February 21, 2010 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. - With the score even at 3-3, Lady Bulldog sophomore Olesya Tsigvintseva delivered with a match-clinching win at court No. 1 to give Mississippi State's women's tennis team (4-1) a 4-3 victory over Louisiana-Monroe (4-1) Sunday at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Center.
"We survived. That is about all you can say about today," said Lady Bulldog head coach Daryl Greenan. "Louisiana-Monroe fought hard, but give Olesya a lot of credit for making some adjustments and getting that win for us today."
Mississippi State was dominant in doubles, picking up wins at the first two courts. Lady Bulldogs Radka Ferancova and Mariia Ryzhova got it started for MSU with an 8-1 triumph over ULM's team of Jourdan Smith and Lena Satge at the second position, while teammates Olesya Tsigvintseva and Natalia Mayuk ousted the Warhawk tandem of Claire Clark and Monica Winkel, 8-3.
Seeing her first action of the spring season, MSU junior Elizabeth Hall paired with teammate Valeriya Makarycheva at court No.3. The Lady Bulldog tandem fell; however, in an 8-2 loss to Vivian Polak and Ana Burjaili.
In singles, the two teams went back and forth to decide the match. The Lady Bulldogs started much like they did in doubles with dominant performances on courts two and four. Ferancova ousted ULM's Lena Satge 6-1, 6-2 at the second position, while Mayuk powered past Sidney Bruscato of ULM, 6-2, 6-2. Those wins put State up comfortably at 3-0, but the Warhawks battled back.
ULM took a win at court No.3 as Winkel defeated Makarycheva 6-1, 6-3 to put the score at 3-1. Mississippi State had two first-set victories on courts one and six, but ULM fought to carry each of those contests into the third set. Lady Bulldog Jordan Zachary then was unable to hold onto her lead, taking a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 loss to Burjaili at court No. 6. Meanwhile, at the No. 5 position ULM's Polak ousted State's Ryzhova in a tight 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 affair.
Tied at 3-3, the match came down to the first court where Tsigvintseva was playing ULM's Clark. After a tie-breaker first set that went in Tsigvintseva's favor, Clark battled to take the second with relative ease. Then,in the last set of the match, Tsigvintseva built up a lead and held off her counterpart for a third-set victory and a match-clinching 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 win.
With four victories now on the year, the Lady Bulldogs will be back in action this Thursday, Feb. 25 when they play host to Tulane. Match time is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT.
