Joseph Case, Ph.D., joined the Mississippi State family in July of 2022 as the Assistant Athletic Director / Counseling & Sport Psychology. Case earned his Ph.D. from Western Kentucky in 2020, where he also served as an adjunct instructor from Jan. 2016 until May 2020.
Beginning in 2019, Case served as the coordinator of TOPCARE at WKU, which is a program that offers student-athletes resources for a variety of mental health issues, from wrestling with perfectionism and fighting academic stress to eating disorders and depression. In 2021, Case was promoted to the Director of TOPCARE at Western Kentucky, where he served for one year before being named the Assistant A.D. of Counseling & Sport Psychology at Mississippi State.
As the Director of TOPCARE at Western Kentucky, Case was responsible for providing clinical sport psychological services to Division I collegiate student-athletes. He provided both individual and group mental health services, including performance enhancement seminars and consultation with coaching and sport medicine staff.
Case was named the WKU Athletics Support Staff Employee of the Year in back-to-back years (2021-22) for his efforts working with the Hilltopper student-athletes.
Case was also an assistant professor of psychology at Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College from 2014-21. Previously, Case served as the Clinical Services Coordinator at Skyline Madison Campus, while he was also a mental health specialist at Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital in Nashville from 2010 to 2011.
Case is Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certified. His dissertation, which was defended in 2020, was based on mental health screening of student-athletes.
