Mississippi State baseball head coach Brian O’Connor has added a key leader to the program’s infrastructure, naming Justin Armistead the Bulldogs’ associate athletics director for baseball.
Armistead joins Mississippi State after spending the past 10 seasons as Assistant Athletics Director for Baseball Administration at Virginia. In that role, he oversaw all administrative functions of the Cavaliers’ baseball program and played an integral part in supporting one of the most successful stretches in program history.
“Justin is one of the most trusted and strategic minds in baseball administration I’ve worked with,” O’Connor said. “His dedication, vision and relationships help elevate our program in every area. We’re thrilled to have him join us in Starkville.”
Armistead managed Virginia’s operational budget, served as the program’s primary liaison to multiple internal and external departments, and played a pivotal role in facility planning, including UVA’s $18.6 million Davenport Field expansion completed ahead of the 2018 season. His leadership helped streamline operations during Virginia’s multiple College World Series runs and national title campaign in 2015.
A Halifax, Virginia native, Armistead is deeply familiar with the inner workings of a championship program. He first worked with the UVA baseball team as an undergraduate, contributing as a bullpen catcher and camp assistant before being named Director of Baseball Operations for two seasons. He briefly worked in the financial sector before returning to the athletics department full-time in 2011 as Director of Event Management, overseeing gameday operations for multiple sports before transitioning back to baseball.
“I’m incredibly honored to join Coach O’Connor at Mississippi State,” Armistead said. “This program’s history, standards, and the passion of the fanbase speak for themselves, and I’m proud and humbled to be a part of it.. I’m looking forward to immersing myself in Mississippi State and Starkville.”
Armistead graduated from the University of Virginia in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in economics. He and his wife, Jessica, have a daughter, Finley, and a son, Rory.
