Men's Tennis Wraps Up ITA All-American Championships

STARKVILLE – Bryan Hernandez Cortes and Raphael Vaksmann had a successful showing at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa Oklahoma.
Hernandez Cortes advanced to the Round of 16 before losing to the eventual champion of the tournament, Keegan Rice of Virginia. Entering the tournament as the 63rd ranked player in the nation, Hernandez Cortes took down No. 23 Alexander Razeghi of Stanford in straight sets in the opening round. The junior then took down Florida's Henry Jefferson, the 39th ranked player in the nation, in three sets in the Round of 32. After losing to the nation's sixth ranked player Rice in the Round of 16, Hernandez Cortes moved to the consolation bracket.
In the consolation bracket, Hernandez Cortes took down the 12th ranked player in the country, Ohio State's Preston Stearns, in three sets. After losing the first set 6-2, the junior came back to win both the second and third sets 6-4. The win over Stearns marks Hernandez Cortes' second win over a top-15 opponent, his highest ranked win coming last fall over No. 8 Corey Craig of Florida State.
Vaksmann opened up the tournament in the qualifying bracket. After an opening round loss to Jeremy Zhang from Illinois, the sophomore took down Wake Forest's Joaquin Guilleme, the 73rd ranked player in the nation, in the consolation bracket. Vaksmann entered the tournament ranked as the 95th ranked player in the country.
The wins for Hernandez Cortes put the junior at seven career victories at the ITA All-American Championships and Vaksmann at two for his career. After the tournament, both Bulldogs have six ranked wins in their respective careers in Starkville.
