Bulldogs Start 1-0 With Sweep Over Georgia State

MOBILE, Ala. – Mississippi State volleyball found themselves on the right side of a season-opening decision as they took down the Georgia State Panthers in straight sets in the first day of the Jaguar Classic.
"I'm proud of this team for earning our first win of the 2026 season. The dedication and focus they have shown leading p to this match is impressive, and I am fired up to continue working with them as we get into this season together," head coach Julie Darty Dennis said. "It' truly going to take all of us to have success, but they are locked in and fully committed to our goals. We are going one match at a time, but it was really fun to watch them come together, play hard and get win number one."
The Panthers started the match on the offensive, building up a 15-11 lead at the first media timeout of set one and stretching it to 16-11. The Bulldogs would respond, however, as they went on a 9-0 run to gain the lead at 20-16. State ultimately would win the opening set, 25-20.
Mississippi State rode their momentum into the second set, as they never trailed on the way too a 25-21 victory. The third set saw five lead changes, but the Bulldogs were ultimately able to secure the victory 25-22.
State had a balanced attack, as eight Bulldogs collected kills in the contest. Lindsey Mangelon led the Bulldogs with 12 kills in the contest, hitting at a .276 clip. Bernardita Agilar added 10 to the Bulldog total. Gha'Naye Whitfield-Moss and Olivia Stant, who made her collegiate indoor debut after playing beach for the past four seasons, each tallied five kills apiece. Cayley Hanson facilitated the Bulldog attack with 31 total assists.
On the defensive side, Ava Anderson set a new career-high for total blocks, collecting seven in two sets of action and besting her previous total of 4, which she set against Arkansas last season. McKenna Yates served as the libero for State and led the Bulldogs with 19 digs.
The Bulldogs will be back in action for the second day of the Jaguar Classic when they take on the host team, South Alabama. First serve is set for 6 p.m. and will air on ESPN+.
