Thompson Claims Fourth Straight USATF Javelin Championship

NEW YORK – Former Bulldog Curtis Thompson (2015-19) won his fourth straight USATF Championship in the men's javelin and sixth of his career on Saturday at Icahn Stadium in New York.
After registering a foul on his first throw, Thompson threw 76.19m to take the lead. He improved on that mark with a toss of 77.45m in the third round. That mark would hold up until the final two throws of the day.
Georgia's Jordan Davis was the first man in the field to break 80 meters on Saturday, heaving his final throw out to a season-best 82.36m. That put all of the pressure on Thompson, who would have just one attempt remaining to try to protect his crown. Thompson's final heave sailed 87.59m, which was a season best and just 17 centimeters shy of his career best.
The Florence, New Jersey, native joined an exclusive club as the fifth American man to win six or more career USATF javelin championships. He is now just the fourth man in U.S. history to win four straight javelin national championships along with legendary Breaux Greer (2000-07), Boyd Brown (1939-42) and George Bronder (1914-19).
Thompson now holds the second-longest throw in the world this year and remains in qualifying position for the World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest on Sept. 11-13.
