No. 11 Bulldogs Fall To Sixth-Ranked Auburn In Series Finale
May 09, 2026 | Baseball
STARKVILLE - No. 11 Mississippi State never found the swing it needed Saturday, and No. 6 Auburn made sure the Bulldogs never had time to recover.
Auburn broke open a three-run game with nine runs across the fifth and sixth innings and beat Mississippi State 13-2 in seven innings at Dudy Noble Field to take the series.
The Tigers (35-15, 16-11 SEC) finished with 14 hits and scored in five innings, while MSU (38-14, 15-12) had nine hits but stranded nine runners and struggled to turn early traffic into enough offense before Auburn pulled away.
Ace Reese provided the biggest swing of the day for State, blasting a two-run homer to center field in the fifth inning after Gehrig Frei singled up the middle. The home run, Reese's 18th of the season, was initially reviewed for possible fan interference before the call stood.
That cut Auburn's lead to 8-2, but the Tigers immediately answered with four runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Frei and Reese led the Bulldogs offensively, combining for six of Mississippi State's nine hits. Frei went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Reese finished 3-for-4 with both of MSU's RBIs. Noah Sullivan, Bryce Chance and Reed Stallman also added hits for the Diamond Dawgs.
Auburn scored twice in the second, added one in the third and then took control with its two big innings. Cooper Rembert homered and drove in three runs, Eric Guevara had three hits, three runs and three RBIs, and Eric Bingaman added a two-run homer as the Tigers stretched the lead to double digits.
Ryan McPherson took the loss for State, allowing one earned run on two hits in 1 1/3 innings. The Bulldogs used six pitchers, with Dane Burns, Parker Rhodes, Jack Bauer, Maddox Webb and Tyler Pitzer all working in relief.
Auburn starter Andrew Petrovic kept Mississippi State from building momentum, allowing two runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings. He struck out four and walked two to improve to 8-2.
The loss dropped State to 15-12 in SEC play with one regular-season conference weekend remaining. The Diamond Dawgs travel to No. 9 Texas A&M for a three-game series starting Thursday at 6 p.m. on SEC Network+.
