AUSTIN, Texas - No. 10 Mississippi State landed the response it needed Saturday afternoon, and the Diamond Dawgs did it against one of the nation's tops teams.
Jacob Parker homered, Drew Wyers delivered the biggest swing of the day and MSU held off a ninth-inning push to beat No. 4 Texas 7-4 at Disch-Falk Field, evening the weekend series and giving State a marquee road win.
The Bulldogs (36-11, 14-9 SEC) scored six runs across the seventh and eighth innings after being locked in a tight pitcher's duel for most of the afternoon. Wyers broke the game open in the seventh with a three-run homer to left field, turning a one-run Mississippi State lead into a 5-1 advantage.
Texas (34-10, 14-8) threatened late, scoring three times in the ninth and bringing the potential tying run to the plate, but Dane Burns struck out Anthony Pack Jr. with the bases loaded to end it.
State struck first in the fourth when Parker lifted a solo home run to left field off Texas starter Ruger Riojas. The Longhorns answered in the fifth on Casey Borba's solo shot to left center, but Mississippi State's pitching staff kept Texas from taking advantage of repeated traffic.
Duke Stone gave the Diamond Dawgs a strong start, allowing one run on five hits over five innings. He walked one and struck out five before turning it over to the bullpen. Jack Bauer earned the win, improving to 4-0 after working 2 1/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
Mississippi State finally got to the Texas bullpen in the seventh. Bryce Chance singled with two outs, Aidan Teel was hit by a pitch and birthday boy Kevin Milewski followed with an RBI single to left center to put MSU back in front. Wyers then jumped on a pitch from Thomas Burns and drove it over the wall in left for a three-run homer, his third of the season.
State added two more in the eighth. Ace Reese walked, Blake Bevis singled and Parker brought home Reese with a groundout after a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position. Chance followed with an RBI double down the left-field line to stretch the lead to 7-1.
Wyers finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Chance went 2-for 4-with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Parker drove in two runs, and Milewski added the go-ahead RBI in the seventh.
Texas made it tense in the ninth. Adrian Rodriguez led off with a solo homer, Temo Becerra singled and Josh Livingston walked. Borba later drew a bases-loaded walk, and Aiden Robbins followed with a two-run single up the middle to cut Mississippi State's lead to three.
Burns entered with two on and one out and struck out Maddox Monsour before hitting Carson Tinney to load the bases. With the tying run aboard, Burns got Pack Jr. swinging to seal one of State's biggest wins of the season.
Texas stranded 17 runners, while Mississippi State overcame three errors and 10 Texas walks.
Riojas was sharp early for the Longhorns, allowing one run on three hits with seven strikeouts over five innings. But Mississippi State did its damage against the bullpen, scoring six runs over the seventh and eighth to hand Brett Crossland the loss. Crossland fell to 1-2.
The Bulldogs and Longhorns will play the rubber match on Sunday at 1 p.m. on ESPN. Sophomore left-hander Charlie Foster (0-2, 5.67 ERA) will get the ball for State while Texas goes with graduate southpaw Luke Harrison (4-2, 3.93 ERA).
