
Goold Blanks New Mexico To Open Jaguar Classic

MOBILE, Ala. – Peja Goold tossed her fourth shutout of the year as No. 12 Mississippi State opened the Jaguar Classic with a 1-0 win over New Mexico on Friday morning.

Goold now boasts five complete games on the year and has allowed no more than two runs in any appearance. She struck out six Lobos on Friday, and she is now 29-2 when striking out at least five since the start of last season.

Mississippi State (20-2) left the bases loaded in the first and stranded runners on first and third in the second inning, but the Bulldogs broke through in the third. Kiarra Sells doubled off the center field wall to open the inning and later scored on Abby Grace Richardson's two-out double to left-center.

New Mexico (10-10) threatened with a runner on second and just one out in the top of the fourth, but Goold responded with a pair of strikeouts to end the threat. She retired the side on just 10 pitches in the fifth and worked around a single and an error in the sixth before turning in a three-up-three-down frame in the seventh.

Xiane Romero – Doubled and now three of her four hits this year have gone for extra bases.

Kiarra Sells – Extended her season-long hitting streak to 10 games, one shy of her career-long streak … has an extra-base hit in nine of the last 10 games with seven doubles and three homers … batting .607 (17-for-28) during the streak … turned in her team-leading ninth multi-hit game of the season.

Morgan Stiles - Has reached base in all but one game this year … reached on an error to open the first and has reached to start the MSU half of the first inning in 15 of 22 games.
