June 12, 2025 | Women's Basketball
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mississippi State will host Pitt inside Humphrey Coliseum on Dec. 4 as part of the 2025 ACC/SEC Women's Basketball Challenge, announced by both conference offices and ESPN on Thursday. Tip time and television assignments will be announced at a later date.
Mississippi State and Pitt will face off for the third time in the two program's history. The Bulldogs lead the series 2-0. The last time the two teams faced off was on December 20, 2001, where State earned an 88-86 victory in Cancun, Mexico. The first matchup between the Bulldogs and the Panthers took place on December 17, 1977, where State walked away with a 68-59 victory. This will be the first time the two teams meet in Starkville.
The ACC/SEC Challenge will see 16 games take place over two days, beginning on Wednesday, December 3. The SEC went 10-6 against their ACC Foes last season after splitting the inaugural challenge, 7-7.
Mississippi State enters year four of the Sam Purcell era in the 2025-26 seasons. The Bulldogs have found success in each of the first three seasons, making the NCAA Tournament twice and picking up over 20 wins each season.
Purcell has won 67 games in his three seasons in Starkville, the most of any coach throughout their first three years in program history. He has also accumulated the most SEC wins of any coach in their first three seasons with 24.
The Bulldogs have played in six matchups against the ACC in Coach Purcell's tenure, winning three of those. State's last victory over an ACC opponent came during the NCAA Tournament, where the Bulldogs took down Cal 59-46.
Pitt enters the 2025-26 season coming off a 13-19 season, going 5-13 in the ACC. The Panthers are coached by Tory Verdi, who enters his third season at the helm of the program.
