March 20, 2025 | Track & Field
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State track and field kicked off the indoor season at the Alumni Bulldogs Relays, held at home. The day was highlighted by Marie Rougetet, shattering the previous hammer throw program record.
The day started in the women's hammer, with Jewel Giles and Rougetet making their collegiate debuts in the event. Kaitlyn Walker rounded out the competition for State's athletes, where she earned a personal best of 40.19m in the first section of the event. Rougetet capped off the second flight of the event, starting off the competition with a massive throw of 63.02m, which initially surpassed the program record. In round five of the competition, she improved her mark to 64.45m to overtake the program record by nearly two meters. Rougetet led the field by over ten meters, comfortably winning her first collegiate hammer throw competition.
The men's hammer throw was the final event of the day, with Caleb Kaplan and Tyler Mason making their collegiate debuts in the hammer. Both athletes made improvements in the third round to cement themselves in the finals of the event. Kaplan ended the day finishing fifth with two legal marks, the farthest being 53.20m. Mason threw two identical distances of 48.81m in the third and sixth rounds to finish eighth overall.
The competition will resume with the women's discus in the field, and the women's 3000m on the track tomorrow afternoon.
