Mississippi State Drops A Pair To No. 11 Texas In Sunday Doubleheader
March 16, 2025 | Baseball
Diamond Dawgs will next play Jackson State on Tuesday.
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State dropped a pair of close seven-inning games to No. 11 Texas on Sunday at Dudy Noble Field. The Diamond Dawgs fell 5-3 and 4-1 to the Longhorns to wrap up the weekend's Southeastern Conference-opening series, which concluded with a Sunday doubleheader after Saturday's action was postponed due to severe weather in the area.
MSU had the potential winning run at the plate in the final inning of the first game of the double dip, then had the potential tying run at the dish in the day's second game, but in both contests, the Longhorns held on.
Noah Sullivan and Ace Reese led the way offensively for State in the doubleheader opener. Sullivan went 2-for-3 with a walk, while Reese had a game-tying two-run double in the middle innings that, at the time, knotted the score at 3-3. Bryce Chance, Sawyer Reeves and Hunter Hines also had hits in the ballgame.
On the mound in the first game, Ben Davis earned the start and went 2 2/3 innings with a pair of punch outs. Evan Siary came on out of the bullpen and hurled 2 1/3 strong shutout frames with five strikeouts. Nate Williams pitched the final two innings for State and also struck out five.
In the day's second game, Reed Stallman had a hit, a pair of walks and an RBI. Reese, Reeves and Dylan Cupp also had Bulldog hits.
Karson Ligon started on the mound and struck out four Longhorns over 3 2/3 innings. Mikhai Grant, Charlie Foster, Ryan McPherson, Dane Burns and Chase Hungate handled the final 3 1/3, combining to strike out five Longhorns with three of those punch outs coming from Grant in his 1 1/3 innings of work.
