Bair, Hassan Set New Program Records In Texas
February 08, 2025 | Track & Field
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Mississippi State track and field closed out the Charlie Thomas Invitational with two university records broken, and another entry to the MSU top five all time list.
"We're getting close, but we're not quite where we want to be yet," said head coach Chris Woods. "However, we are making leaps and bounds with every competition that we go to. I am satisfied with where we are right now, but I know we have more left in us and I'm excited for the rest of the regular season."
The day began in the heptathlon, with Peyton Bair lining up in the 60m hurdles. Bair entered the day with the lead in the overall standings. Running a time of 7.98, he finished second in the race, adding 987 to his point total. He followed this up with a 4.80m jump in the pole vault and a 2:44.90 finish in the 1000m, finishing first overall in the heptathlon. His 6,104 point finish surpasses his previous personal best by 331 points and is the new program record in the event. Bair finish takes the collegiate lead, the fourth highest finish in the world, and the 19th highest finish in NCAA history.
Kyndall Sessom moved to the No. 3 spot on the MSU all-time list in the 60m after running a new personal best of 7.40 in the semis. She advanced to the final, running 7.44 and matching her previous personal best set on day one.
In his first collegiate mile, Abdullahi Hassan shattered the program record, previously held by Don Hunt. Hassan clocked a time of 4:01.92 to finish first in the race after making a move to take the lead in the last 75 meters. The previous record of 4:04.00 was set on March 3, 1968, standing for nearly 57 years, as the longest standing program record to date.
The team accumulated eight more personal bests throughout the second day of competition. On the track, Jessicka Woods earned a new personal best in the 60m hurdlers, and Hunter Anderson in the mile. The 400m group saw large improvements on both sides, with Woods and Jaitlyn Ware earning new lifetime bests for the women, and Cyrus Jacobs Jr. and Christion Barker for the men. Hayley Ogle and Anje Nel earned the last personal bests of the day, both improving their times in the 800m.
The Bulldogs will be back in action next weekend, splitting between the Music City Challenge in Nashville, Tennessee, and the Tiger Paw Invitational in Clemson, South Carolina.
