Bulldogs’ SEC Tournament Run Ends In Semifinals

PENSACOLA, Fla. – A short-handed Mississippi State team put up a fight but ultimately saw its SEC Tournament run ended by No. 25 LSU on Thursday by a final score of 3-1.
The Tigers, who are now unbeaten in 10 straight matches, opened the scoring in the 18th minute, but the real turning point in the match came 10 minutes later. In the 29th minute, a Tiger went down in the box. After video review, a red card was shown to Rebeka Vega-Peleka and a penalty was awarded to LSU, which extended the lead to two goals. LSU scored again in the 32nd minute to take control of the match.
State (12-6-1, 5-4-1 SEC) got one goal back late in the half. After winning a corner, Ally Perry's service found Tatum Borman, the shortest player on the field at the time, who headed it back across the goal and in to cut into the deficit in the 43rd minute. At the break, the teams had combined for four shots on goal and all four had found the back of the net.
"I'm really proud of the character this group showed tonight," head coach Nick Zimmerman said. "To go down a player against a team unbeaten in its last nine games and to have more possession and create some really good chances says so much about their mentality. They continued to compete to the very end as Just Us."
The Bulldogs had 67 percent of possession in the first half, but despite playing down a player, State was on the attack for the majority of the final 45 minutes. At the end of the match, the possession total had climbed to 69 percent in favor of State. MSU earned four corners in the second half and fired eight shots but could not pull any closer.
Borman's goal made her the first player in program history to score multiple goals in a single SEC Tournament and she joins Aitana Martinez-Montoya (2023-24) as the only players with multiple career SEC Tournament goals. Perry becomes the sixth player with an assist in the tournament, and she wraps up her SEC Tournament career with a school-record 22 shots, including six on frame.
The Bulldogs will now await their NCAA Tournament seeding. The NCAA Selection Show will air Monday, Nov. 10 at 3 p.m. CT on NCAA.com. The top 32 seeds will host first round matchups on their campuses.
